Project name

Future Submarines – SEA 1000

Industry sector

Description

The SEA 1000 Future Submarine program has been established by the Australian Government to manage the delivery of the next generation of submarines for the Royal Australian Navy.

A competitive evaluation process has commenced and an international partner will be selected to work with Australia to develop and deliver the Future Submarines.  Three potential partners from France, Germany and Japan have submitted proposals with an announcement likely in early 2016.

The state and the region will benefit from the project with some construction elements to be located at Port Adelaide depending on the proportion of local build in the program and allocation of work to South Australia.

This program will be a critical component of the future state and regional economy, particularly if major program elements are based in South Australia.

Estimated project value

$50 billion

Commencement date

Decision on build partner expected in March 2016
